Different Air Purifier Types
First, filters will be discussed. This is an important consideration when buying an air purifier to keep your air clean.
Grille-style air cleaners use filters made of fiberglass, cotton, foam, or synthetic fibers. The compactness of the fiber used will control the particle size passing through it. Thick dense filter material seize super small particulates in the air. Pleated filters have an increased surface area to take hold of particles. Some filters can be washed and some must be replaced.
Charcoal and HEPA Filters
Activated Charcoal Filters (black picture) are used as an adsorption (not absorption) material for capturing fumes, odors, dust, pollutants, smoke, and chemicals in your air. Activated charcoal is porous with tiny areas to catch molecules passing into it. Large particles stick to the numerous pores in the charcoal.
These two words are different by only one letter but can be difficult to understand.
Absorption happens when atoms pass through or enter a bulky material like sponges.
Adsorption happens when the atoms settle or accumulate on the surface of a material rather than literally entering or diffusing into that same material.
HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) (white picture above) filters remove particles to comply with the US Department of Energy (DOE) regulations. Any material can be used for the filter but it must meet the standard of 0.03% for particles 0.3 micrometers in size and larger. Airflow is specific for penetrating the filter. HEPA filters are used in high-end vacuums and other devices using filters for home or industrial use.
UV Light Air Purifiers
Airborne bacteria, viruses, and mold spores pass through the UV (ultraviolet) light that cleans the air when the microbes pass through the light source in the unit killing them so that they cannot reproduce thus, causing no harm.
Ionizing Air Purifiers
This type air purifier uses a corona discharge that creates negatively charged ion molecules. The large particles and dust are the easiest to be ionized because being larger they pass through the coronal discharge effortlessly.
One metal plate in the purifier is charged with negative ions and the other metal plate is charged with positive ions. These attract the particles when the plates have opposing charges. They cluster together becoming heavier to settle in the air and attach inside the air purifier.
Ozone Generating Air Purifiers
Ozone generating air purifiers are similar to ionizers in that they change the oxygen molecules into ozone.
These molecules have three oxygen atoms. In nature, the atmosphere is dioxygen that is made of two oxygen atoms. Exposed to UV light or a corona discharge, some of the molecules split into free oxygen atoms. Some of the atoms make ozone yet most of the oxygen combines again into dioxygen. These are safe to use when you follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Ozone is a toxic gas that is not a stable molecule and can react with other chemicals in the air making new compounds that can be more unsafe than the ozone. Manufacturers of ozone devices state that ozone disinfects the air, provides health benefits, and deodorizes the air.
Why Use Air Purifiers?
An air purifier or air cleaner removes contaminants from the air in a room. When you want to breathe clean air, an air purifier is safe to use with no side effects. Using them liberates you from dusting and vacuuming pet dander and other indoor particles frequently as well.
Where Can I Use an Air Purifier?
An air purifier can be used anywhere in your home. I like mine in the room I spend the most time. You can purchase several for endless air purification in other rooms as well. When you have a finished basement and spend time there, an air purifier will be an added bonus for clean air.
If your basement is unfinished and smells musky having mold, an air cleaner is a must to remove that odor.
The Best Air Purifiers
For allergies, asthma, dust, mold spores, pet dander, viruses, bacteria, tobacco smoke, and more pollutants, the best air purifiers are reviewed for your consideration.
Timer modes provide convenience and digital controls are easy to read and some units are available with hand-held remote control units.
Features to Consider When Buying an Air Purifier
1. Clean Air Delivery Rate
Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is the amount of filtered air volume returned to the air after being filtered by the air purifier. Three measurements are specified for dust, tobacco smoke, and pollen. The greater the CADR number the higher the air purifier is filtering your inside air.
Many brands of air purifiers will have this seal. The acronym AHAM means Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers with the certified Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) logo type. The testing certification is used for rating air purifiers by the Consumer Union for its publication of Consumer Reports. This test and certification is recognized by the American National Standards Institute, ANSI.
2. What is the Clean Air Delivery Rate?
CADR was established in the early 1980s and AHAM in 1967. CADR shows the rate of pollutants and contaminates reduced in a testing chamber. This test determines the air purifier’s capability for removing certain particulates in a controlled chamber and it is measured for its ability to remove 0.10 to 11 microns from the air for pollen, dust, and smoke.
- Size of the particle eliminated
- Percentage of particles eliminated
- Actual air volume moving through the unit
Three Sizes for Particles Tested
- Pollen: 5.0 to 11.0 microns
- Cigarette Smoke: 0.10 to 1.0 microns
- Fine Dust: 0.5 to 3.0 microns
Particle percentages are converted to numerical rates ranging from 0 to 400 for smoke and 0 to 450 for pollen and dust.
Interpretation for Air Purifier Efficiency
The test gives you comparison numbers to determine the performance of air purifiers. It shows an overall performance of the filtering system as well to help you determine how large of a unit you will need for your space.
3. Area Coverage
It is problematic to purify air in large areas if you purchase an air purifier that is too small. When a unit is too small, the air purification will not be completed to your satisfaction and you will be wasting your money. Always buy an air purifier to clean the air using square feet for your area.
To determine the square footage of the area, multiply the length by the width of the room. A room that is 12 x 14-feet = 168-square feet. Purchase a unit that is not more than 67% of the room size you want the air purifier to clean.
If your room is 168-square feet, 67% of that is 113-square feet. You will have more air changes per hour (ACH) from your unit so do the math. Do not purchase a unit that only delivers 2 air changes each hour. Allergy sufferers like to have 5 or more air changes each hour.
There is no one air purifier that is better than another. You will need to identify the type you want, the features, and whether it has a remote control, and if it works for your square footage for the area you want to cover.
4. Noise Level Compared to Other Sounds
Most manufacturers of air purifiers indicate the decibel (dB) level for each fan speed. This comparison might help you understand the dB rating better for air purifiers.
Each person perceives sound differently. Sound levels (acoustics) can be affected by sound traps such as drapes, carpet, upholstered furniture and be quieter. Sound will reflect when there are no soft surfaces to absorb the sound vibration. Your distance from the unit will change the sound; the speed will change the decibels. The faster (higher) it runs the louder it will be since it is running faster to push more air. The lower the fan, the lower the noise level.
5. Filter Reset
Check your manufacturer’s manual for the filter reset button location and how to use it.
6. Asthma and Allergy Responsive
More than 60 million of Americans suffer from asthma, allergies, COPD, and other respiratory issues. Today, you can purchase an air purifiers made with specific filter functions with the best being True-HEPA filters to remove pollutants in your home where you spend most of your time.
7. Airflow Rate (CFM)
Airflow rate is a critical consideration when purchasing an air purifier. Airflow is measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute). Air is a gas and it can be calculated by its mass or volume. The air cleaner manufacturer’s describe airflow in volume. Airflow is contingent on two aspects: the built-in fan and the filter’s efficiency.
8. Air Changes per Hour (ACH)
Air Changes per Hour (ACH) lets you know the number of times the air is replaced in an hour. The higher the number the better the air purifier. The number can fluctuate between 1 and 7. The higher the number the more the efficiency. If your home has contaminants, it is best that the unit is capable of handling 2 or more air changes each hour.
Be sure when researching different models for how many air changes the unit performs each hour. Some of the air purifiers are less expensive and are most efficient when the fan is running full power and that causes noise. With more high-end models, the number of air changes will be greater with lower fan settings.
9. Service Indicator Light
There is no actual service to be done for an air purifier. A long-life LED (light emitting diode) or LCD (liquid crystal diode) indicator light will illuminate when it is time to change the filters. Some air purifier models will provide electronic readouts with built-in timers to indicate the length of time its filters will last.
10. Dust Sensor and Air-Quality Monitor
Dust sensors—detect particle concentration in the air by using optical sensing devices. The dust sensor detects very small particles such as cigarette smoke from larger particles such as dust.
Air quality monitors—use technology and engineering that allows monitoring of indoor air quality with an LCD screen that provides small and large particle counts with a dynamic bar graph showing actual count readings.
Best Affordable Air Purifiers for Bedrooms, Small Spaces, Large Rooms, Pets, Smoke, Allergies, and Asthma
The Levoit® air purifier, model LV-H132, is affordable so you can have one for each room and the office too shown on Amazon.com®. This air purifier is a best brand choice air purifier bar none. Using this model myself, I found that my stuffy sinuses, sneezing, and runny nose were helped in the summertime when allergens from trees and grass are high.
I put it on the nightstand by my bed when sleeping, turn off the night light, and fall asleep with its whisper-quiet fan at 5.50 dB (decibels).
A breath of fresh air does not come in an aerosol can or plug-in device. Those are chemical fake smells that give people allergic reactions as well. What I’m talking about is pure and fresh unadulterated air without anything more.
The Levoit® air purifier uses 3 filters to remove smells, allergens, and dust particles. and will cover an 86-square foot area. Put it in your bedroom, family room, or anyplace you want the purist air you can breathe.
The air purifier is an ionizer not an ozone generator so will not harm birds. An ionizer purifies the air by introducing negative ions while an ozone generator produces ozone which is O3 versus O2 that is oxygen. An ozone generator removes smells and replaces the air with that typical ozone smell just like when lightning strikes nearby and it doesn’t do that. Ozone sometimes smells like chlorine or bleach.
The True-HEPA filter removes 99.97% of particulates, odors, bacteria, mold spores, pet dander, dust, and allergens that induce allergies in the air. It removes impurities and particles as tiny as 0.3 µm (microns). A human hair is 50 µm. That’s impressive for particle removal with filtering air pollution rate of 2.5 PM (particulate matter).
The unit comes with 3 filters:
- The prefilter is a fine weave of material next to the True-HEPA filter for removing pet dander, bacteria, mold, and fungus.
- The True-HEPA filter is in the middle for controlling dust, dust mites, pollen, and larger particles.
- The end filter is the activated carbon filter that removes stale tobacco, cooking and doggy odors.
With the unit, you will receive all 3 filters.
Levoit® Replacement Filters LV-H132-RF are available on Amazon.com® and should be changed approximately every 6-months. Use only the Levoit® replacement filters to keep product performance and the Warranty made for this air purifier. Cheap imitation products will not work.
Note: It’s very important to remove the plastic wrap from each filter or the unit will overpower and not function damaging the unit.
The CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) is 40 CFM (cubic feet per minute). The air purifier removes bacteria, mold spores, dust, dust mites, fungus, large particles, and pollen. It is superior for babies, youngsters, elders, and everyone. This is an air purifier, not a humidifier, and not a diffuser. It does not use water and does not use essential oils.
It has 3 speed settings of low, medium, and high with options for numerous conditions. It’s equipped with nightlight functions with 2 brightness settings. The lights can be turned off completely if you like that best.
Carefully remove the new 3-stage filters from their plastic packaging and place them into the unit. The activated carbon filter (black) should be installed first, followed by the True-HEPA filter (white), then the preliminary filter (black). Make sure the pull tabs are facing outward.
The Levoit® unit will not compete with furniture. It’s shorter and smaller than a chair with a tremendous ability to not be in the way of your fresh air. Put it on your coffee table, side table, fireplace mantle, or on the floor.
Plug the UL® listed cord into a North American 110/120-Volt, 50/60 Hz outlet. For those in other countries, you will have to buy a 220/240-Volt adapter to run the unit. The power is 28-Watts.
The dimensions are 14.6-inches tall x 9.8-inches across and weighs about 3-pounds.

10. Mammie Mac Biota Bot True-HEPA Air Purifier, Large Rooms
The Biota Bot, Model MM208 on Amazon.com®, is a 7-stage air purifier that eliminates cigarette/cigar smoke as all air purifiers do along with dust, pet odors and dander, and the smoke from wood burning stoves or fireplaces.

14. Green Air® Deluxe Air Purifier Ozone Generator, Extra-Large Rooms
The Green Air® 3 plate HEPA and odor fighting filter alpine is a top seller on Amazon.com® for an affordable air purifier ozone generator. This unit, model number GAD500, covers up to 3500-square feet and is priced lower than some of the medium-sized room units.
This is the newest unit from Green Air® for 2018 with 3 ozone plates that you can turn off for having the maximum odor, mold, and mildew control.
The 2 timers can be set for on/off and times of your choice. You will have a separate timer for the ozone function with the remote control or the control panel on the front.
The quadruple filter system is a huge plus containing 1 mesh dust filter, 1 HEPA filter for allergens, 1 carbon filter for odors, and 1 PCO (photocatalytic oxidation) filter for germs, an emerging technology in the HVAC industry.
It also has a superior UV (ultraviolet) lamp for sterilization that can be turned on or off.
With its quadruple (4) washable filters, the air purifier sucks in unclean air from the back passing it through the prefilter, HEPA filter, activated carbon filter to control odor, and then the PCO filter.
The filters seize contaminants in the air as small as 0.2 microns. This is the only company I know of that uses 4 filters.
The anion emitters are now in the front of the fan at the front panel. Anion is an atom or molecule that has a non-zero net electrical charge; its total number of electrons is not equal to its total number of protons. A cation is a positively-charged ion, while an anion is a negatively-charged ion. Because of their opposite electric charges, cations and anions attract each other and readily form ionic compounds.
The emitters release trillions of negative irons into your home. They attach to dust particles and drop down to the floor.
This functions to eliminate dust, pet dander, and other debris that falls to the floor or stays in the air. What’s left is fresh oxygen air to breathe.
It works by creating oxygen (O2) with 1 more molecule (ozone O3) in the levels that will be effective for your square-footage space. The activated oxygen (ozone) will sanitize pollution embedded in walls, ceilings, floors, carpets, furniture, clothing, countertops, and all surfaces in your home. Use ozone when the property is unoccupied with the built in timer. Ozone returns to oxygen after about 30- to 45-minutes.
Eliminate tobacco smoke odors, cooking odors, chemical/cleaning agent odors, paint odors, and more for a space no one is living in. The building or house will then be fresh with clean air.
Do not stay in the space when the unit is working; ozone can damage the respiratory system. It can be used in basements and garages as well.
The maximum O3 output is 1080 mg/hr. You have the option to use 1, 2, or 3 ozone plates at a time at 360 mg/hr per plate.
The unit measures 12-7/8-inches tall x 8-7/8-inches wide x 9-3/4-inches deep and weighs 13-pounds.
Plug the UL® listed 3-prong grounded cord into a North American 110/120-Volt, 50/60 Hz receptacle. The power is 48-Watts. For those in other countries, you will need to buy a 220/240-Volt adapter.
This unit does not meet California requirements and cannot be shipped to California.
Gift-wrapping is available and you will get a User’s Manual, remote control, and a 2-year Warranty. It is made in China.

The housing is made of industrial-grade steel to help keep the unit clean for many years.
The timer is a new and improved design for you to control the length of time needed.
The Dimensions are 6.75-tall x 8-inches wide x 5.75-inches deep.
Replacement plates can be purchased on Amazon for this model.
Replacement Ceramic Ozone Plate part for Enerzen Ozone Generator O-555 and O-777 Models by O-ION.
All ozone generators require an ozone plate or cartridge in order to work. Ozone (activated oxygen, O3) is created when voltage is applied to the ozone plate/cartridge to create a corona discharge.
This corona discharge reacts with the oxygen (O2) present in the ozone generator chamber and elements in the ceramic plate to create ozone. Over time these elements in the ceramic plate will exhaust themselves and less ozone will be created. Each plate is rated to last approximately 5000+ hours.
Plug the UL® listed 3-prong grounded 5-foot long cord into a North American 110/120-Volt, 50/60 Hz receptacle. The power is 60-Watts. Those in other countries will need to buy a 220/240-Volt adapter to use it.
Read your Owner’s Manual for safety information, how to use in cars, and more.
Amazon’s customer reviews with questions and answers are extremely helpful for this unit.
Gift-wrapping is available. You will receive the unit with A/C cord. Your satisfaction is guaranteed with a 30-day unconditional replacement or refund if you are not satisfied. The Factory Warranty is 3-years. It is made in China.

Tips Using Air Purifiers
All about extension cords is on Wikipedia here. It is critically important to have the correct AWG (American Wire Gauge) for the length of extension cord to use with the air purifier you buy.
Be sure to click on the yellow extension cord in the picture to the right to read and learn about the NEMA numbers on Wikipedia if you don’t already know.
If you use a thin extension cord that you use for your electric lamp with 2-prongs, you’ll burn out the motor. Remember, the longer the cord the larger the gauge needed.
You will need to know your room size where you plan to use your air purifier. Check the square-footage coverage from the manufacturer.
You will want a unit that filters the air several times each hour with 2 or more air changes each hour.
The graphic shows a room 20 x 13 feet = 260-square feet. Use this formula to calculate your area for square footage.
For considering other rooms into your square footage configuration, see the second box.
The equations are for 8-foot room ceilings.
Remove Plastic Wrap from New Filters Inside Unit
After you get your air purifier, remove the plastic wrapper from the filters inside or not installed when received or you will ruin the unit and void your Warranty.
The first time you use the unit, the residual pollution in the room will be at its maximum. You want to clean the area by at least 80%. When you reach that level, the unit will not need to do as many air changes to keep the air clean and fresh.
Write the date on the outside edge of your new filters. I find calendars don’t work well.
Be sure to put your air purifier in a place for good airflow. You don’t want the flow direction to be impeded by arches, half-walls, counter bars, columns, or large furniture, or half-closed doors.
Without the air flowing freely, you will block the air and the unit will not function as it is designed to do.
Don’t Block Airflow
Portable units are lightweight with carrying handles and some with caster wheels while others sit on 4 feet.
Put them in an open area and not flush against a wall or door. Your instruction manual will explain it and all models will vary.
Do not place them behind the sofa, recliner, under shelves, under a table, or in a corner.
The air intake must be able to get the room air to clean it and the air exhaust must have space to emit the clean air. It’s common sense.
The air purifier must have space around all four sides and the top. The bottom needs space when sitting on thick carpet.
Keep it a few feet away from objects for optimal efficiency. Some air intakes are near the top, in the front, or on the sides. You don’t want the output air blowing on the underside of a table or the back of your sofa.
You choose where you want it to be: at the side of your sofa, on a table top, near a doorway, in the kitchen, bathroom, basement, garage, or the office. Take it with you if your business is a massage studio or physical therapy room.
Air purifiers work well in hair and nail salons for ridding the area of chemical smells in the waiting area.
Keep Purifier Area Clean
Your air purifier will function much better when the area it sits in is clean being free of dust, pet hair piling up, and other debris. It will not need to work as hard and puts out clean purified air better. Dusting furniture and vacuuming floors will help its overall performance. I know of no one who lets their home look like this; totally disgusting.
Always have the air purifier turned off and unplugged before cleaning or changing the filters. Changing the filters is the most important thing you can do for a fully operational air purifier.
The filters can be accessed easily. Be sure you check how it’s done in your instructions.
Always install filters using the arrow to go into the unit for airflow.
Disposable Filters Cannot Be Cleaned
There are no units in our reviews about disposable air filters being used in any of the brands listed and reviewed. The brands shown use activated charcoal and HEPA filters that must be replaced. These can be vacuumed but not washed.
To get a filter wet invites mold and bacteria unless it’s made specifically for washing. It’s best to not buy a disposable filter type air purifier. Items 6, 8, 10, and 13 above use washable filters but not the disposable kind.
Cleaning the Inside
After removing the filters, some of the framework and parts can be vacuumed and washed with a damp cotton cloth. The grille can be vacuumed or brushed clean with an old toothbrush and wiped down with a damp cloth.
Paper towels are not recommended because they tear off into cracks and sharp places. You will see a lot of dust inside and might need a flashlight to see all the areas well.
Cleaning the Fan
Air purifier fans get just as dirty as a ceiling fan, car fans, and computer fans. They too need to be cleaned of dust and particles sticking to the edges and the blades themselves.
You must have a clean fan for it to run sufficiently and smoothly to clean the air. Use a small vacuum and a damp wet cotton cloth to remove the dust and particles.
Cleaning the Housing
The housing is the box or frame that holds all the parts inside the unit. Cleaning the outside and inside is important for the best airflow function.
Clean the ventilation grille, ports, or holes of any dust blockage. The air intake grille must be cleaned for the fan to function properly for air output or it will burn out the motor from heat overload. You will find pet hair, dust, and other small particles to remove on all areas.
For running the air purifier while you sleep you will want a quiet fan. Noise is measured in dB (decibels). A unit with 35 dB is the sound of a human whisper, so it is very quiet.
Larger units for 600- to 800-square foot coverage, will be quieter than a unit covering 200-square feet and it will do a better job as a whole. It will make less noise since the filters are bigger to absorb some of the sound, plus running on a lower speed saves on your electrical energy bill.
Service Indicator Light
There is no actual service to be done for an air purifier. The only service for the unit is maintenance routinely. A long-life LED or LCD indicator light will illuminate when it is time to change the filters on most models.
Some air purifier models will provide electronic readouts with built-in timers to indicate the length of time filters will last.
Air Purifiers Do Not Use Essential Oils or Water
Air purifiers take air in and send clean air out. They hold no water! Therefore, they do not function as a humidifier or essential oil diffuser.
If you want a small humidifier that uses essential oils check out this one with an essential oil tray. Or, try using a diffuser with essential oils or without oils to be a small humidifier with only water added.
See diffuser and humidifier differences here.
